Dr. Abdinasir Hirsi is a cybersecurity researcher and executive leader specializing in Artificial Intelligence-driven network and cybersecurity. He holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM), where he conducted his doctoral research under the supervision of Ass. Prof. Dr. Lukman Audah and served as a Graduate Research Assistant at the Advanced Telecommunication Research Center (ATRC), Faculty of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. He earned his BSc in Telecommunication Engineering from Mohammad Ali Jinnah University, Pakistan, and an MS (Research Work) in Electrical Engineering from Bahria University, Pakistan. Prior to his doctoral studies, Dr. Abdinasir accumulated over two years of professional experience in network infrastructure, ICT, and cybersecurity, working with major telecom organizations including Somtel Telecom (Somalia) and Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL). He holds professional certifications from Cisco, Fortinet, and (ISC)².
Dr. Abdinasir has authored more than 15 peer-reviewed scholarly publications, including six journal articles as first author, with publications indexed in Web of Science and Scopus, and articles published in IEEE Access and Physical Communication (Elsevier). He has also contributed extensively to international conferences as a primary author, and currently has work under review with IEEE Transactions on Network and Service Management (TNSM). His research interests include SDN security, AI-driven cybersecurity, DDoS detection and mitigation, machine learning and deep learning for intrusion detection, and intelligent network systems. In parallel with his research career, he has served as a university lecturer at East Africa University (Somalia), teaching core courses in telecommunications and networking, and supervising over 20 undergraduate final-year projects. A committed contributor to the global research community, Dr. Abdinasir has reviewed over 100 manuscripts for top-tier (Q1) journals and conferences indexed in Web of Science and Scopus, including IEEE Access, Journal of Network and Computer Applications (Elsevier), Heliyon (Elsevier), PeerJ, Array (Elsevier), and IEEE Computer Society journals.
As Executive Director of AiNetSec Lab, Dr. Abdinasir leads the lab’s research vision, international collaboration, and capacity-building initiatives, with a strong commitment to advancing AI-powered cybersecurity solutions and strengthening engineering and networking security expertise in Somalia and beyond.
